TRANSATLANTIC TAX TALKS: HNW MOBILITY AND THE PRIVATE MARKETS

RELEASE DATE 28.06.2023

At a recent Palmela Tax Talk event in Lisbon, experts from Palmela, PwC UK, Kore Partners, and the Brightman Group held a dynamic discussion on relocation, asset structuring, and investment opportunities in the European market. The event highlighted the importance of understanding the distinct processes involved in both relocating to Portugal and structuring assets for investment in the country.

Highlights from this edition of Palmela Tax Talks:

Relocation equals administration. Moving to Portugal requires navigating complex procedures — for everything from entry visas to school enrolment. Strong local legal and administrative support is key to a smooth transition.

Buyers need to understand local real estate markets. Investment opportunities vary significantly by region and neighbourhood — investors are encouraged to analyse market dynamics at the local level for a successful investment.

Things can change. Experts emphasised the need to plan ahead, beyond the immediate move. Foreign nationals need ongoing support and local expertise to ensure accordance with ever changing tax regimes, including Portugal’s Non-Habitual Residence (NHR) Program, as well as around asset importation and succession planning.

Prices of properties favoured by foreign investors will continue to rise; investment opportunities may emerge later this year following interest rate hikes and potential defaults.
